Ken first started renovating about 1985 shortly after moving into the Old House in the Glebe. At about this time the neighbour living upstairs started renovations on his place and for quite a while the building was a mess. This was about the time that Ken met John who was working on the upstairs and who would later lead the renovation effort on the major extension to the building after ownership was fully acquired by Ken and Paula, and even later would help with the construction of the first houseboat.Renovation work on the Old Building would include: gutting and redoing the middle floor (Ken’s apartment) entirely, gutting and redoing the common area more than once, renovating the first floor to rent out, renovating the third floor to rent out, and helping with the major extension to the building with John. In addition, interlock stone sidewalks and patio were added, the backyard was fenced and the driveway was turned into interlock stone. Decks and landscaping were also added.A lot of work was put into the Old House. It was eventually torn down in 2015.Even before moving into the New House it was decided that the kitchen needed redoing, the rec room needed retiling, and the place needed repainting. Although most of the work was contracted out Ken and Paula helped. The next project was the addition of a proper shower in the ensuite bathroom. The cottage is the current big renovation opportunity. Decks have been added to the property and a sunroom has been built on the existing deck by the side of the cottage. Interior work on the bedroom and the bathroom is next. A gazebo is in the future.
